Lunches used to be quite different from today. It was treated more like a mid-day break, a short one, than
an actual meal and the lunch counter was always a favorite place to go eat at. Nope, they didn't serve jumbo-burgers and a pile of fries. Instead, lunch was quite simple and just enough for an energy boost without stuffing you.It could also be a social time where workmates or neighbor friends could get together and nibble and gossip.
For children, it was considered a must and, though it wasn't large in size, it was healthy. Far healthier than what kids often get today.
Click to enlarge the lunch counter menu to the side. You'll see an array of simple sandwiches. Amazingly, there were no sides. In fact, we didn't have "sides" at home, either. Unless you count an apple, tangerine, a cookie or scoop of ice cream.
