Classic Sloppy Joes

Sloppy Joes were always a lunch favorite for my kids
but it was also a favorite back in my school days as well. This recipe is the original schoolhouse version.

  • 1 pound of ground beef
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 teaspoons prepared mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 4 hamburger buns, split
  1. In a large skillet, cook beef over medium heat until no longer pink; drain.
  2. Stir in the ketchup, water, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, garlic powder, onion powder and salt.
  3. Bring to a boil.
  4. Reduce heat; cover and simmer for 15-20 minutes.
  5. Serve on buns.

[note: if your joes are too thick, you could make a slurry of 1 tsp cornstarch and a little of the juice and add it or add 1-2 tsp tomato paste]
