Did you know that people did not snack years ago? That it was a fairly new phenomenon? While the industrial revolution brought about the "three squares a day" (prior to this people ate according to sunrise, sunset and siesta) the snack itself came into vogue when work became more focused on flexibility than the classic "timeclock".
We've all seen it on shows like Leave It To Beaver: The kids come home and Mrs. Cleaver offers them a snack. Funny though- you didn't see snacking on The Waltons. You know why? Because it wasn't done in the thirties which is when the show took place.
Today what is treated as a "snack" was once just part of the meal. Mrs. Cleaver offered her boys cookies. But at the Walton home, a cookie or two was part of lunch or dinner. That's how I knew my Mama was raised in the twenties and thirties- our cookies came with lunch. We didn't come in and get a snack. Same thing for cake or pie or any other sweet treat. Pretzels, chips, and the like were also part of a meal and not a snack.
Only popcorn and popsicles had the distinction of being a "treat" (Mama didn't even use the word "snack") and the latter was only in the summertime (even if Mama made them) and the popcorn? Hot, freshly made and buttered, was reserved for Cowboy show night or Disney night (either Saturday or Sunday night).
On this page I try to focus on healthier "snacks" but may I discourage you from snacking? Any one of these could be incorporated into a meal or reserved for a special time.
