This was a favorite at parties during the 1970s and I think that's because it doesn't get any easier. But I decided to cut the sodium from the original recipe, which called for premade frozen meatballs and high sugar / high sodium barbecue sauce along with very sweet grape jelly.
THE MEATBALLS
- 1 lb ground turkey (lean) or beef but adjust for calories
- 1 tbsp dry onion flakes
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- Mix the meat and the spices together into 1/2 - 3/4" balls (depending on how large you want them)
- Place on a spayed, sided baking sheet and bake at 350 for 15-20 minutes, turning once.
- Remove and cool to room temperature.
The Sauce
- 2 1/2 cups Welches Simply Fruit Grape Jelly (note: this is higher in calories than sugar-free but its not a biggie)
- 18 oz Barbecue sauce of choice
- In a sprayed crockpot, stir together the jelly and barbecue sauce.
- Pour into the crockpot and add in the meatballs
- Heat to warm and serve.
