Buttermilk Frosting

  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 1 (16-oz.) package powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 4 to 5 Tablespoons buttermilk

  1.  Beat butter at medium speed with an electric mixer until creamy.
  2.  Gradually add powdered sugar, beating at low speed until blended.
  3.  Slowly beat in vanilla and 4 Tbsp. buttermilk.
  4.  Increase speed to medium, and beat until smooth.
  5. If desired, beat in the remaining 1 Tbsp. buttermilk, 1 tsp. at a time, until desired consistency is reached.

NOTE: if you want to add extra flavor strength to your frosting- something like what your cake is made from (like the above orange flavored cupcakes) you can split the vanilla in half with orange extract or use only orange extract, but half the amount, and add in some orange zest finely chopped!
