Boston Brown Bread with Nuts

  • 3 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2-1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2-1/2 cups buttermilk
  • 1 cup molasses
  • 1 cup golden raisins
  • 3/4 cup chopped hazelnuts

  1. In a large bowl, combine flours, baking soda and salt. 
  2. In a bowl, whisk buttermilk and molasses. 
  3. Stir into dry ingredients just until moistened. 
  4. Fold in raisins and nuts. Transfer to 2 greased 8x4-in. loaf pans.
  5. Bake at 350° for 45-50 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. 
  6. Cool for 10 minutes before removing from pans to wire racks.
