I grew up in Northern Virginia, just across from DC and not far from Maryland. So we had access to some very good seafood from the ocean. My favorite was crab. They'd wrap the table in brown paper and pour out a big bucket of crab. Corn was there. Hush puppies were there. And everyone cracked and picked their way through large Maryland crab (more expensive) or blue or softshell. My favorite was the blue crab.
Lump crab cakes have always been a Maryland staple. What makes them different is the large lumps of very fresh crab. There's other items to enjoy as well but these were my favorite.
