- 2 c milk
- 1/2 c sugar
- 1.2 c crisco
- 2 pkg yeast
- 1/4 c lukewarm water
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1 tbsp salt
- 1/3 tsp soda
- 5-6 cups plain flour
- mix milk, sugar and crisco in a small saucepan, heat to just below boiling- do not boil!
- cool to lukewarm
- dissolve yeast in water and add to the milk and sugar mixture while warm
- Add enough flour to make a thin batter
- cover and let rise in a warm area for 2 hours
- Add soda, baking powder and salt
- mix well
- add flour, working in well until mixture reaches hard dough stage
- [you can refrigerate it at this point if you're not ready to make rolls]
- Form into rolls and let rise 2 hours until ready to bake
- bake at 400 for 15 mins or until golden.
- Brush with butter before cooling
