Aunt Ethels Hot Rolls

  • 2 c milk
  • 1/2 c sugar
  • 1.2 c crisco
  • 2 pkg yeast
  • 1/4 c lukewarm water
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tbsp salt
  • 1/3 tsp soda
  • 5-6 cups plain flour 

  1. mix milk, sugar and crisco in a small saucepan, heat to just below boiling- do not boil!
  2. cool to lukewarm
  3. dissolve yeast in water and add to the milk and sugar mixture while warm
  4. Add enough flour to make a thin batter 
  5. cover and let rise in a warm area for 2 hours
  6. Add soda, baking powder and salt
  7. mix well
  8. add flour, working in well until mixture reaches hard dough stage 
  9. [you can refrigerate it at this point if you're not ready to make rolls]
  10. Form into rolls and let rise 2 hours until ready to bake
  11. bake at 400 for 15 mins or until golden.
  12. Brush with butter before cooling

makes 2-3 dozen
